Sanctioning Requests
All requests for sanctioning must be submitted to, and approved by Rodear America no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the event date.

Competition Guidelines

  1. All sanctioned Rodears should include a sort as part of the event course. Each contestant must sort their own cattle from a herd of not less than 15 head of cattle or, in the case of a cross country course with enough area to accommodate a 150 foot outrun, cattle can be turned out for a dog to be sent on a 150 foot or longer outrun. The outrun is to be unassisted by the handler and horse. If the outrun option is used, at least one of the course obstacles must have a sort.
  2. All obstacles, including the sort, should require both the dog and the horse & rider to complete. The horse & rider should not be restricted in any manner while on course with the exception of an unassisted outrun as described above.
  3. The competition should be scored solely on points and time. No subjective judging. No assistance from the announcer and/or judges during a run.
  4. A minimum of three divisions is recommended to be offered. They are Open, Intermediate and Nursery.
  5. Nursery age requirement – Any dog competing in this division must have been born on, or after April 1, two years prior to the competition year.

Zero Tolerance Policy
Following Rodear America’s Zero Tolerance policy on unsportsmanlike conduct and abuse to people and animals is highly advised. All event hosts are urged to review and be well versed on the policy which is available on the website under Guidelines. Additionally, no training, or dummy training devices should be allowed on any dog at anytime, anywhere on the premises of a Rodear America sanctioned event.

Recommended Guidelines

Cattle usage & Handling

  1. It is strongly recommended that the event host provide enough cattle so that they are not used more than 2 times in one day.
  2. Cattle should not have been used previously in team penning or team sorting competitions.
  3. Cattle should have consistent access to water & feed during the event.
  4. Cattle should be adequately “dog settled” prior to the event so as to maximize the potential of cattle honoring the dogs.

Dress Code
Western attire, which includes a long sleeve, collared shirt, western hat and boots is recommended to be required at all association hosted events and is encouraged at all sanctioned events.
